If an adult tooth has been knocked out, call (561) 652-5796 now, while you read the steps below. A tooth that's put back within about an hour has a much stronger chance of reattaching. Our Hypoluxo Rd office in Lake Worth sees these emergencies the same day, seven days a week.
The $99 is a minimum fee for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam (ADA code D0140) and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white part you chew with. Don't touch the root. It's covered in fragile cells that help the tooth reattach.
- If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or clean water for a few seconds. Don't scrub it, use soap or wrap it in a tissue.
- Try to put it back in the socket, facing the right way, and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it. Doing it in the first few minutes gives the tooth its strongest chance.
- If it won't go back in, keep it moist. Milk is the easiest choice. You can also tuck it in your cheek, if the person is old enough not to swallow it. Plain water is a last resort.
- Call us and head over. Bring the tooth with you.
Don't let the tooth dry out. A tooth left in a hot car or on a towel at a pool deck for even half an hour loses most of its chance.

Baby teeth are different. Don't put a knocked-out baby tooth back in, because it can damage the adult tooth growing underneath. Call us so we can check your child's mouth.
If there's a head injury, confusion, or bleeding that won't stop, go to a hospital emergency room first.
Signs you need care today
Any knocked-out adult tooth is a same-day emergency. So is a tooth that's been pushed out of place, driven up into the gum or loosened by a hit. These often come from falls, sports, bike crashes or a stray elbow in the pool. Even if the tooth looks fine afterward, the nerve inside can be damaged, so it's worth an exam.
What happens at your same-day visit
We check the tooth and socket and take an X-ray to look for root or bone fractures. If the tooth can go back, the dentist gently cleans the socket, sets the tooth in place and attaches it to its neighbors with a thin flexible splint. The splint usually stays for a couple of weeks while the tooth settles.
Most replanted adult teeth need a root canal a week or two later, since the nerve rarely survives. We'll plan that with you. If the tooth can't be saved, we talk through your choices for filling the gap later and make sure the area heals cleanly.
For teeth that are chipped or cracked rather than knocked out, see broken tooth repair.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a knocked-out tooth survive outside the mouth?
Results are strongest when the tooth is back in place within about 30 to 60 minutes. Keeping it moist in milk or saliva buys time. A tooth that has dried out for over an hour has a much lower chance of reattaching, but call anyway.
Can you put a knocked-out tooth back in?
Yes, if it's an adult tooth and the root is intact. Hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if needed and press it gently into the socket. Then bite on a clean cloth and call us. Never replant a baby tooth.
What if my child knocked out a baby tooth?
Don't put it back. Stop any bleeding with gentle pressure from clean gauze and call us. We'll check that no pieces are left behind and that the adult tooth underneath wasn't hurt.
Will a replanted tooth last?
Many replanted teeth last for years, especially when they're put back quickly and get a root canal on time. Some are slowly replaced by bone over time. We follow up with X-rays so any change is caught early.
