Emergency Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Lake Worth

When a wisdom tooth keeps getting infected, is pushing on the molar beside it, or has broken down past saving, removing it is usually the fix that lasts. Call (561) 652-5796 for a same-day exam at our Hypoluxo Rd office in Lake Worth. We'll tell you whether it can come out today or needs a short wait first.

The $99 is a minimum fee for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam (ADA code D0140) and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

Signs you may need a wisdom tooth removed soon

Pain at the back of the jaw doesn't always mean the tooth has to go. It's more likely when:

  • The gum over a partly erupted wisdom tooth has swollen up more than once.
  • The X-ray shows the tooth tilted into the molar in front of it.
  • There's decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the neighbor it's pressing on, that can't be repaired well.
  • The tooth has cracked or broken.
  • A cyst or a pocket of infection has formed around it.

If you're just starting to feel discomfort, our wisdom tooth pain page covers what can be done short of removal.

Facial swelling that's spreading, a fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing means you need care now. Go to a hospital emergency room first if breathing or swallowing is affected.

What happens at your same-day visit

We start with an exam and an X-ray that shows the whole tooth, its roots and how close they sit to the nerve in the lower jaw. The dentist explains whether the extraction is simple or surgical. You'll also get the price in writing before any work starts.

If it can come out today: we numb the area thoroughly. A wisdom tooth that's fully through the gum can often be loosened and lifted out much like any other tooth. One that's under the gum or angled needs a small opening in the gum, and sometimes the tooth is removed in pieces. A few stitches close the spot.

If there's a heavy infection: numbing doesn't work as well in very inflamed tissue, and surgery is easier on you once the swelling has calmed. In that case, we treat the infection that day and book the extraction a few days later.

Some wisdom teeth sit very deep or close to the jaw nerve. If yours does, the dentist will walk you through what that means for the procedure and for healing before you decide.

You'll leave with gauze, a printed aftercare sheet and our 24/7 phone number. For extractions of other teeth, see emergency tooth extraction.

Cost of wisdom tooth extraction in Lake Worth

For patients paying without insurance, the first step is the $99 exam and X-ray. The extraction is a separate fee based on how the tooth is positioned. We give you that number in writing before we begin.

We accept most PPO and HMO dental plans and Medicare Advantage dental plans. In-house payment plans, plus Sunbit, Cherry and CareCredit financing, can spread the cost. Our cost and insurance page explains more.

Frequently asked questions

How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?

Most people feel sore for two to four days, with swelling peaking around day two. Soft foods, cold packs on the first day and rest all help. The gum closes over in one to two weeks. Call us if pain gets worse after the third day.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the empty socket comes loose too early, leaving the bone exposed. It causes a deep ache a few days after the extraction. Avoid straws, smoking and hard spitting for the first several days. If it happens, call us and we'll treat it.

Can you remove an infected wisdom tooth right away?

Sometimes. If the infection is mild, removing the tooth can be part of the cure. With heavy swelling, we usually calm the infection first and remove the tooth a few days later, when numbing works better and healing is easier.

Should I have all four wisdom teeth out at once?

Not necessarily. In an emergency, we focus on the tooth causing the problem. Once you've healed, the dentist can talk with you about the others and whether they're likely to cause trouble later.
